What is WhedonCon?
WhedonCon 2017 is a charitable fan convention that brings together all fans of Joss Whedon for a good cause. If you enjoy Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity, Cabin in the Woods, etc., then this is the convention for you. It’s an event made by Whedon fans for Whedon fans, as there will be celebrity guests from Whedon productions, Whedon fan tables, and Whedon trivia. Additionally, there will be many parties, screenings, creative activities, and of course, everyone dressed up as their favorite Whedon character! Finally, fans can also send in their own event ideas to WhedonCon. If you have a great idea for a panel, send in your idea here or you might have a great idea for a workshop, demo, or live event. Either way, you’re guaranteed to have a blast with your fellow Whedoners!
What’s most important about WhedonCon 2017, however, is that it’s a charitable convention. All the proceeds are donated to various charities partnering with WhedonCon. It’s a great way for Whedon fans to get involved, put their creativity to good use, and celebrate the creative genius that is Joss Whedon.
WhedonKnit Nights
In addition to the convention, there are also charitable events leading up to WhedonCon, such as the WhedonKnit Nights, hosted throughout February and March. What happens at these events? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like; Whedon fans get together and knit. The last Whedon Knit Night of 2017 was hosted at Galaxy of Comics in Van Nuys, California on Saturday, March 25th from 5 pm – 7 pm.
Galaxy of Comics is a great comic book store that also sells graphic novels, Magic the Gathering trading cards, toys, figures, and collectible superhero busts. The store also hosts scheduled signings, game nights, art classes, etc. Now, they’ve played host to this year’s final WhedonKnit Night.
At WhedonKnit Night, fans of all knitting expertise levels gathered and knitted for a good cause. It was a great opportunity for everyone to give back and meet some great people! There were also some great snacks and drinks provided as fans got in touch with their creative side. This was especially true for event host Toni Adams, who knits regularly and was very excited to put these talents to good use. There was never a dull moment when fans got together, snacked, and chatted, all while knitting items for Newborns in Need.
Newborns in Need (SFV Chapter)
All the items made at WhedonKnit Nights are given to Newborns in Need (SFV Chapter). This organization donates clothes and toys to hospitals for families who are suffering because of their premature or stillborn baby. They also help teenage mothers and poverty-stricken families by sending these donations to various agencies and organizations. Their overall goal is to do what they can to make the lives of these stressed and saddened families a bit easier. Newborns in Need is just one of the charities partnering with WhedonCon 2017.
WhedonCon 2017
Sounds like a lot of fun, right! In addition to the WhedonKnit Nights, fans also have the opportunity to donate to Newborns in Need at the convention, as well as other charities. Some of these charities include the Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center (in memory of Ron Glass), Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Pop Culture Hero Coalition, Kids Need to Read, and so much more. There will also be an opportunity to donate blood, take part in a charitable auction, etc.
If you’re interested in having a fun weekend with your fellow Joss Whedon fans, while supporting local charities, then, by all means, attend WhedonCon 2017!
WhedonCon 2017 will take place at the Warner Center Marriott in Los Angeles, CA from May 19th – 21st.
