Peabody Award Winners Announced; “Girls,” “Doctor Who,” and “Louie” Inculded

The Peabody awards, present by  the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Media and Journalism, recognizes excellence in electronic media such as television, radio, and news. Thirty-nine awards were given out this year to a diverse group of people and projects based on their excellence in their field or their contributions to society. The Peabody award is a huge honor for media creators.

HBO’s Girls

“Robin’s Journey” A PSA campaign centered around “Good Morning America” co-anchor Robin Roberts’ treatment for a rare blood disease

“Deign Ah!” a Japanese series aimed at developing children’s creative cision

“The Other Side of Jimmy Savile” dealing with revelations that a beloved knighted TV star was a sexual predator

FX’s series “Louie”

ABC Family’s drama “Switched at Birth”

HBO’s “Game Change”

BBC’s “Doctor Who”

Lorne Michaels, who is now in his 38th year of being executive producer of “Saturday Night Live” Peabody’s are rarely awarded to individuals, but Michaels is still finding new talent and nurturing careers.

 

The Smithsonian Channel’s “MLK: The Assassination Tapes” which combines archival footage to piece together the events around Martin Luther King Jr.

 

Radio winners included:

A “This American Life” segement titled “What Happened at Dos Erres” which is about a Guatemalan immigrant who learns that the man he believed to be his father is actually the man who led the massacre of his village.

 

And ABC News’ coverage of “Superstorm Sandy” among many more winners.
