Yesterday, actress Ellen Page did something that surprised almost no one and came out publicly as a lesbian. But her coming out was not something put together tastefully in a magazine along with a four-photo-spread of her smiling with the family dog or a kept-away secret lover. She made a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive conference, a moving display of strength and courage, and only made her statement ‘I am gay’ halfway through, giving more attention to the cause than to herself. And, justly so, to a standing ovation.
