Thor 2: The Dark World

Our favorite blond haired, hammer wielding Asgardian is back in Thor 2: The Dark World. This time the peril comes to Asgard, the home of Thor and Loki. Thor 2 has a beautiful balance of Action, Romance, emotion, and a special brand of awkward humor.

With the events in New York from the Avengers over, and Loki locked up for his crimes, it seems as if there is peace for Thor. Unfortunately an old foe of Asgard returns to take over all of the nine realms. With this threat looming, Jane Foster, Thor’s love interest, becomes the host of the all powerful Aether and finds her way to Asgard.

The story is full of twists and turns. There were a number of “fake outs” that left myself, and probably a few other viewers shocked. There were some other events that viewers probably wished were “fakes.” But those are spoilers so I’ll stop there.

Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Loki, once again, overshadows everyone else. Loki is a very strong and complex character, and Hilddleston plays him so well. Honestly, thinking about this movie, its difficult to remember anything BUT Loki. A great thing for Hiddleston but the character does over shadow many of the others, especially Thor, the main character (Chris Hemsworth does a fantastic job by the way).

Another great performance was by Kat Dennings. Dennings plays Jane Foster’s intern, Darcy Lewis. Dennings is hilarious and has some great comedic timing. It is delightful to see her in a role that is not a terrible TV show.

The City of Asgard, which we didn’t see too much of in the first Thor film, is beautiful in this film. Everything from the costumes to the architecture to the funeral scene is stunning (especially that funeral scene. Fantastic).

Though better than the first Thor movie, The Dark World still doesn’t stand up to the rest of the films in the Marvel universe. Maybe its the lack of the sarcastic Tony Stark, or Captain America’s contagious “truth and justice,” Thor just falls a little flat compared to the rest. But do not take that as a clue to not see The Dark World! The Dark World is beautiful, funny, and a great time.

Also, as with any Marvel movie, stay after the credits. Thor comes with two after credits scenes, one of which is very important the other is fun and hilarious (but I’m not telling you which is which).

Overall Thor 2: The Dark World gets 3.5 stars out of 5.
