Ranking the X-Men Movies

Since X-Men Apocalypse comes out Friday, here is a ranking of all the X-Men movies from worst to best, and do not worry fanboys Deadpool is included.

8) X-Men Origins: Wolverine:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine disappointed fans everywhere with it’s cheesy visual effects and lacking story. It follows as the title suggests, Wolverine, the movie tells how he gets his powers through the Weapon X program. There are many cringe worthy moments but the biggest has to be the final fight with the silent Deadpool…Wait a Silent Deadpool? What were they thinking? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kd6zYnHwQWA

7) X-Men: The Last Stand

Expectations were high with the success of the first two X-Men movies. While fans would agree that the action scenes were entertaining, the movie lacked in overall quality.  It follows it predecessor as Jean Gray is resurrected as the Dark Phoenix, meanwhile a cure for the mutant gene has been created which does not hold well with Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.  With these two storylines brought potential, overall all execution of the movie was poor.

6) The Wolverine

The Wolverine was mixed amongst viewers. Wolverine travels to Japan to visit an old friend from World War II. When Wolverine arrives he gets caught up in the world of yakuza and samurai. Soon Wolverine must face his own demons and for the first time possible death. The movie was praised for taking away Wolverine’s healing ability to heighten the tension and diving deeper into the character. However the pacing was a mess which kept this installment from being truly great. Just when comic book movies were considered dead after the result of Batman and Robin, a rising filmmaker, Bryan Singer breathed new life into the genre with X-Men. It follows a young mutant Rougue as she accompanies loner Wolverine as they join up with the X-Men lead by Charles Xavier to combat Magneto who wants to see mankind fall. With it’s less campy, more serious approach, and strong performances from the ensemble, X-Men grabbed the attention of both fans and critics alike.

4)X-Men: First Class

Speaking of breathing new life, director Matthew Vaughn helped rejuvenate the franchise by focusing on the two leaders of the mutant race, Magneto and Professor X as they go up against Sebastian Shaw. By focusing on those two characters in their earlier days brought a fresh start to the franchise by really focusing on the two characters friendship.

3) Deadpool

Deadpool is one on those movies that just came out at the right time. With the overabundance of superhero movies these days, Deadpool’s self aware nature was perfect timing. Deadpool follows Mercenary, Wade Wilson aka Deadpool, who is on a revenge quest to find the man who experimented on him, giving him healing powers and disfigurement. Wade hopes to get his nemesis to give back Wade’s old life so that he can reunite with his old finance. Ryan Reynolds has a bit of redemption of reprising the role of Deadpool and gives the  fourth wall breaking character justice by giving one of the best superhero performances in the last couple of years. Deadpool is one of the most entertaining movies with it’s dark humor and violent action sequences so far this year.

2)X2: X-Men United

X2 surpassed its’ predecessor on many levels. First the action was improved with the highlight being the assault on the Manson. It Dives deeper into the characters specifically Wolverine, whose past is revealed through the new villain Stryker, who wants all mutants destroyed. After he has kidnapped Xavier and other X-Men, It’s up to Wolverine and the remaining few to rescue their mentor and stop Striker’s plan to destroy all mutants.

1) X-Men: Days of Future Past

Days of Future Past combined the best of First Class and the original trilogy. The X-Men send Wolverine back in time, to work with the First Class crew to stop possible genocide of mutants. Days of Future Past show that when the X-Men movies are at their best when it’s an ensemble piece. Even though The movie follows Wolverine for the majority, the dynamic between Xavier, Mystic/Raven and Magneto is the center of the movie. Also It erased The Last Stand and X-Men Origins so that’s a plus too.
