Pitch Perfect 2 REVIEW – Aca-Mazing! For a Sequel.

I have to admit I walked out of this movie absolutely loving it. Then I thought to myself, “self, you were kinda not as enthusiastic about half way through the movie”. I was right. Pitch Perfect 2 is a fairly simple plot. Fat Amy shows her junk to Obama at a Kennedy Center event and they get suspended and unable to recruit new Bellas. Bumper is back as campus security and is also throwing it in Fat Amy. Unnecessary but has some funny stuff.

Useless non-sequitur with David Cross and one with a car show. Basically trying to figure out ways for them to sing, or see singing, I really didn’t mind it but they were unnecessary to the plot. We got to see a lot of the Germans and since the german dude is actually a YouTube Star (lots of shameless whoring of all the social network celebs in this one, for marketing and PR i suppose)- the german is the dude that went on a rant about shooting fish in a barrel, now he raps, or something. I’m not a subscriber.

Highlights: the casual racism, sexism and bigotry from lots of the cast. I thought it was beautiful, whether the jokes fell flat or not. Guess what, they’re jokes. You don’t like them? Don’t laugh. But shut up about it. Humor is allowed to touch on sensitive issues, in many ways it is a coping mechanism, but to cry ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’ because of the fat shaming, fat pride, slut shaming, slut pride, feminism, anti-feminism, casual references to human trafficking or border-jumping, or any of the other great stuff from this film would prevent future films from happening. I don’t want to live in a world where that’s possible.

Notable newcomer, Hailee Steinfeld. She’s great, if you don’t remember she’s the girl from Ender’s Game. She also did really well in True Grit, so says the Academy. I had to google it. But she’s a fun addition. Anyhoo, they went from being freshman to being seniors and so now it’s probably over unless they start doing professional singing. but then they’re just singers.

In short, you can probably wait for On-Demand, but I did enjoy it enough to get my money’s worth. I’ll also be downloading the soundtrack because the music in this was AMAZING and per usual the finale song kicked up a lot of dust in the theater.
