Mr. Steve Wilhite, the creator of the Graphics Interchange Format, announced at the 2013 Webby Awards that “jif” was t he proper pronunciation of the acronym. The debate has gone on uneventfully since it’s creation in 1987, and it’s people like Wilhite that made learning how to read difficult in grade school. “Ph” make an “f” sound, “ce” at the end of a work like “Fleece” makes a “see” sound etc. So when you have the letter “g” followed by a vowel, its going to make a hard “g” noise. Unless i’ve been spelling Graphic wrong my entire like and it’s actually Jraphic, i’m pretty sure the majority of english speakers have been pronouncing the acronym correctly.
Not that we don’t love you Mr. Wilhite, you definitely earned your lifetime achievement award after creating a way to compress images while maintaining optimal quality when there are multiple colors present. The ability to send small animated files online easily and quickly has been a great source of entertainment and convenience.
I can’t english good (or jood I just don’t know anymore), but I am pretty sure no one is in the wrong for assuming how to pronounce a word that starts with a “g” and stands for “graphic” is pronounced “gif.”
