With all of the Oscar buzz, this piece of news flew totally under my radar, so it is coming to you a few days late.

On Feburary 24th, it was reported that Ray Cusick, designer of the British science fiction series Doctor Who‘s most famous villian, has died from illness.

The former BBC designer died in his sleep from heart failure last Thursday. He was 84. He is survived by his two daughters and seven grandchildren.

Doctor Who writer mark Gatiss tweeted “Farewell to the great Ray Cusick. His passing is especially sad in this anniversary year but his creation remains immortal. Daleks forever!”

In 1963, Cusick was approached to design a race of aliens for a new show called Doctor Who. His creation would become the most famous and feared of the Doctor’s enemies. These aliens are the Daleks.

It is regrettable that Mr. Cusick had to die during the 50th anniversary year of Who, but his memory will live on in his creation. Where there is a Doctor there will always be Daleks.
