AwesomeCon DC – A Must for All DC Nerds.

For such a great city, it’s hard to believe that this year was the first year Washington DC had a major comic convention.

This past weekend Awesome Con DC was hosted at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC. The convention focused on comics and pop culture and for a first year con it was fantastic.

The convention boasted several media guests including Nicholas Brennan from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Phil LaMarr from Futurama, and Theodus Crane from The Walking Dead. And even more Comic guests which included Larry Hama, Greg LaRocque, and Jeff Shultz.

The convention had a wide range of panels for a first time con; panels on things from Zombie Apocolypses, Harry Potter, Starting your own Web Comic, and Pro Wrestling and even hosted Sci-Fi Speed Dating.

Awesome Con DC was fantastically run for a first time con. I wasn’t able to attend everything the convention had to offer but the panels and events I was able to attend started on time and were interesting. Ticket lines weren’t atrociously slow (though go pretty long towards mid day), and no major problems (from what I saw at least). Very family friendly too. There were a number of parents who took their children along. Sometimes the convention felt a little slow, but I just chalked it up to being a first time convention

Turn out for the convention was fantastic; well over 1000 people showed up, the Exhibit hall was crowded (which is both good and bad), the panels full and the Cosplay was fantastic.

Speaking of cosplay, there was a great variety of costumes. There were characters from comics, games, cartoons, movies, and TV shows. We’ve got a gallery of photos of some of the conventions cosplayers below.

Awesomecon DC is definitely a must for DC area nerds! I know I am going back next year. It’s got great potential and I can’t wait to see where it goes! Awesome Con will return in 2014 on April 19th and 20th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
