Last year, Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling announced Rowling’s screenwriting debut with Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, based on the short book on the life and adventures of magizoologist Newt Scamander. The story will take place in the HP Wizarding World, seventy years before the events of the other books.
Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara has made the announcement that the spin-off will be a trilogy, following Scamander from his start in New York. The choice to create a trilogy instead of a stand-alone film is an eye-roller to be sure, after The Hobbit‘s unnecessary lengthiness and the Mockingjay split. Perhaps with Fantastic Beasts, the films will be needed to contain an expansive story. Not going to hold my breath though. Call me a cynic.
