2014’s Godzilla has been careful to avoid spoiling the monster in its promotional material thus far. In the trailer (below) the colossal creature is shrouded in smoke and clouds, its spiky spine all that we see while soldiers parachute in. We get a nice little montage of the big-name actors. Shit, is that Bryan Cranston? Cool. Oh and that guy from Kick-Ass. Nice. Right before the trailer ends, we find Godzilla swathed in smoke, probably having just destroyed several large international cities, and the monster lets out a thunderous roar. Cut to black.
This kind of campaign reminds of a similar tactic for films like Transformers or Cloverfield, keeping the monsters a secret to provide a huge reveal once the films premiere. Well, in the new Godzilla poster, released by Yahoo! Movies, we get a good idea of this monster. And it is huge. The largest Godzilla across all of its film appearances, starting way back in 1954. The roar in the trailer implies the sheer sign and awesome power of the creature but the image of a giant reptile towering over a city does just as well.
The film will be in theaters May 16.
