I know, I know…… As a fan who has read the books and knew what was coming, it still hurt to watch. In the books, the Red Wedding surprises the hell out of you, and judging by the quick response of outrage in the twitterverse, it surprised the viewership as well. For the people who do not read the books, I would just like to say that I’m sorry for your losses. Robb Stark was one of my favorites too, but just like his father, he didn’t listen to the advice that counted. Littlefinger told Ned Stark not to trust him but Ned didn’t listen and died because of it. Catelyn Stark told Rob not to cross Walder Frey and Arnolf Karstark told him he was going to lose the North because of his new wife. Rob, didn’t listen and now Rob is dead. I know he was a good guy, a great leader, a fierce warrior, and all of the girl fans loved him, but every Thrones fan should know by now that your favorite character or least favorite character could be killed in the next episode. No character is ever safe…
Other than that obvious scene, there were some other pretty good nuggets in this episode as well.
Daario Naharis, Sir Jorah and Grey Worm proved to be badasses as they slayed hoards of Yunkish slave guards. Grey Worm was a boss with his spear.
Bran Stark became a Warging/Skin Changing/magical badass by changing into the mind of Hodor to shut him up.
Jon Snow finally proved where his loyalties lie by being a badass and breaking up with his girlfriend in a very interesting way.
Also, Arya got some respect from The Hound by standing up to him and then knocking a dude out.
This episode was a tough pill to swallow. Some loyal book fans will complain about certain details that the show decided to include but I won’t be one of them. They were hitting on all cylinders this week, and in the end, it’s bite was cold and red. So take a week to mourn your losses then pick up the pieces during the season finale next week.
Enjoy the meme I created for this very occasion.
