Maleficent retells the 1959 Disney classic Sleeping Beauty from the point of view of the delightfully wicked sorceress, played by Angelina Jolie. Elle Fanning and Sharlto Copley co-star but it’s Jolie’s black horns and jutting cheekbones that are stealing the show in all the promos, including this new deliciously evil poster.
I started thinking about how other classic Disney films could be retold before realizing just how many of them already have been. Glenn Close played Cruella De Vil to perfection in 1996’s 101 Dalmatians. Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel starred in the French La belle et la bête (Beauty and the Beast) which was only released last month. There’s a doomed adaptation of Tarzan coming in 2016 with Margot Robbie and Alexander Skarsgård.
I’d pay to see a live action psychological thriller starring Sid from Toy Story, pick up where Toy Story 3 left off but with a decidedly different tone. Dane Dehaan as the evil kid, anyone?
