People’s Choice 2014

Also known as “proof of stupid”. (Background from People’s Choice website, Full list of winners from THR, commentary is mine) Before I start I’d like to say that I’m writing this sentence AFTER my full review of the nominees and winners. I was overly critical of some things, overly marshmallow-y of others, but these are my thoughts and if you want to talk about them tune into my show Wednesday nights at or around 7pm on UStream.

Favorite Movie

“Despicable Me 2”
“Fast & Furious 6”
    “Iron Man 3”***WINNER
“Monsters University”
“Star Trek Into Darkness”

What?! These were the top 5? I would have also chosen Iron Man 3 out of that pile of crap. Yes, I worked with Skydance to help them capitalize their fund to make Star Trek, but the next one is going to be way better so let’s wait for that before we start giving out awards. #newspockFTW

Favorite Movie Actor

Channing Tatum
Hugh Jackman
Johnny Depp***WINNER
Leonardo DiCaprio
Robert Downey, Jr.

I just want to say Thank God it wasn’t Channing Tatum.

Favorite Movie Actress

Gwyneth Paltrow
Jennifer Aniston
Melissa McCarthy
Sandra Bullock***WINNER
Scarlett Johansson

Agreed.

Favorite Movie Duo

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto (“Star Trek Into Darkness”)
Jennifer Aniston and Jason Sudeikis (“We’re the Millers”)
Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man 3”)
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney (“Gravity”)***WINNER
Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy (“The Heat”)

I’m seeing a pattern. Did America only see 6 movies this year?

Favorite Action Movie

“Fast & Furious 6”
    “Iron Man 3”***WINNER
“Star Trek Into Darkness”
“The Wolverine”
“World War Z”

So yes, only 6 movies.

Favorite Action Movie Star

Brad Pitt
Channing Tatum
Hugh Jackman
Robert Downey, Jr.***WINNER
Vin Diesel

Couldn’t see this one coming.

Favorite Comedic Movie

“Grown Ups 2”
“The Hangover Part III”
    “The Heat”***WINNER
“Instructions Not Included”
“We’re the Millers”

Oh God, really? Does this mean we’ll get a Hangover 4 and a Grown Ups 3? Maybe a foreign film called “The Hot”. Maybe we can get expand the ratings meter to include negatives. Which, speaking of negative, I should apologize for in advance.

Favorite Comedic Movie Actor

Adam Sandler***WINNER
Bradley Cooper
Chris Rock
James Franco
Zach Galifianakis

They must have confused this with the 90s. Franco was in a funny film this year, right? This Is The End? I don’t think the other guys were.

Favorite Comedic Movie Actress

Emma Watson
Jennifer Aniston
Melissa McCarthy
    Sandra Bullock***WINNER
Scarlett Johansson

Sandy wins for…oh man…The Heat? I thought chicks were funnier.

Favorite Dramatic Movie

“Captain Phillips”
    “Gravity”***WINNER
“The Great Gatsby”
“Lee Daniels’ The Butler”
“Prisoners”

Fine, I’ll accept Gravity, I’m just glad The Butler didn’t get anything.

Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor

Channing Tatum
Chris Hemsworth
Hugh Jackman
    Leonardo DiCaprio***WINNER
Ryan Gosling

LOL Channing Tatum…

Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress

Amy Adams
Emma Stone
Halle Berry
Oprah Winfrey
Sandra Bullock***WINNER

I might have given this to Adams for American Hustle, if you want to call that dramatic, which I do. We reviewed it last night and then she was on Chelsea Lately, maybe I have crush on her now. Please note: I don’t watch Chelsea Lately. Damnit…

Favorite Family Movie

    “Despicable Me 2”***WINNER
“Monsters University”
“Oz the Great and Powerful”
“Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”
“The Smurfs 2”

Of these choices, agreed.

Favorite Horror Movie

    “Carrie”***WINNER
“The Conjuring”
“Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”
“Insidious: Chapter 2”
“Mama”

Obviously the horror connoisseurs picked the bubble gum princess for this. Hi Chloe.  🙂

[caveat: yes there is a picture of Chloe and I hanging in the studio, not creepy]

Favorite Thriller Movie

“A Good Day to Die Hard”
“The Call”
    “Now You See Me”***WINNER
“Red 2”
“White House Down”

I must have the definition of Thriller mixed up. Red 2 was a comedy, White House Down was action, A Good Day to Die Hard was embarrassing and The Call was suspense. I actually really enjoyed Now You See Me, so I’m happy this was a thing.

Favorite Network TV Comedy

“2 Broke Girls”
  “The Big Bang Theory”***WINNER
“Glee”
“How I Met Your Mother”
“Modern Family”

It’s not as funny as it used to be, but Glee and 2 Broke Girls are both awful. HIMYM needs to go away.

[caveat: I watch 2 Broke Girls every week, I can’t help it!]

Favorite Comedic TV Actor

    Chris Colfer***WINNER
Darren Criss
Jesse Tyler Ferguson
Jim Parsons
Neil Patrick Harris

I don’t know who these people are, and I watch Glee, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, but not the dumb mother show.

Favorite Comedic TV Actress

Jane Lynch
    Kaley Cuoco***WINNER
Lea Michele
Melissa McCarthy
Zooey Deschanel

Kaley is great at playing a dummy, relatively good timing, fantastic assets, great wardrobe, but funny? I’d give this to Deschanel in a heartbeat- even though most of her humor comes from the writing and her supporting cast.

Favorite Network TV Drama

“Chicago Fire”
   “The Good Wife”***WINNER
“Grey’s Anatomy”
“Nashville”
“Parenthood”

I say ‘boo’ to all of these shows. Sorry Hayden/Connie.

Favorite Dramatic TV Actor

Jim Caviezel
  Josh Charles***WINNER
Kevin Bacon
Mark Harmon
Patrick Dempsey

The Good Wife is not good enough to give a supporting character the Fave Dramatic award. Caviezel has been KILLING IT on Person of Interest. Kevin Bacon is doing well on The Following, Mark Harmon is as good as ever in NCIS and Patrick Dempsey had a lot of fun making Transformers 3.

Favorite Dramatic TV Actress

Julianna Margulies
Mariska Hargitay
Pauley Perrette
Sandra Oh
Stana Katic***WINNER

Margulies needs a new show, Hargitay is from…L&O? I think she’s been on SVU for 15 years, let’s let the new people get some creds here. Is that what this was from? Maybe I missed her new show. Pauley Perrette is such an ancillary character on NCIS, she’s GREAT as Abbie but she’s never really had a breakout performance. That one flashback episode with the teddy bear and her best friend was good. Sandra Oh had a lot of fun making Transformers 3.

Favorite Actor in a New TV Series

Andy Samberg
Jonathan Rhys Meyers
    Joseph Morgan***WINNER
Michael J. Fox
Robin Williams

Ah, i LIKE this show, The Originals. BUT if you’re going CW I think either of the Amell brothers would have done fine. Arrow and The Tomorrow People are both better shows and those boys are very talented. I’ll skip the other entries: Tired, Phoning, Aww, Unfunny.

Favorite Actress in a New TV Series

Allison Janney
Anna Faris
Ming-Na Wen
Rebel Wilson
    Sarah Michelle Gellar***WINNER

I didn’t know people still watched West Wing. OH this is for Mom. Yeah that’s no good. Scratch the first two. Ming-Na is great on Agents of Shield but she really doesn’t have a lot of dialogue. Some of the action scenes are great but these are for acting, right? I do like Gellar on The Crazy Ones really isn’t terrible, I do like her. I do. If I keep saying it it’ll happen.

Favorite TV Crime Drama

“Bones”
    “Castle”***WINNER
“Criminal Minds”
“The Mentalist”
“NCIS”

There are a LOT of crime dramas out there. I’m glad they picked 5 good ones, I’m glad they picked Castle. The last episode was great and I’m glad the boys made it out of that fire alive.

Favorite Competition TV Show

“America’s Got Talent”
“Dancing with the Stars”
“MasterChef”
    “The Voice”***WINNER
“The X Factor”

This is tied with Sing-Off, but that’s only a month long. I love the voice, I love the hosts, I love how sexy Christina looks these days. Even when she was bigger she flaunted her assets so that was always nice to see.

Favorite Cable TV Comedy

“Awkward.”
“Cougar Town”
“Hot in Cleveland”
“Melissa & Joey”
    “Psych”***WINNER

I hated the musical, I was disappointed with the season premiere, but overall, from this list, Psych is the best. The rest are just terrible. Comic Book Men should have won.

Favorite Cable TV Drama

“Downton Abbey”
“Pretty Little Liars”
“Sons of Anarchy”
    “The Walking Dead”***WINNER
“White Collar”

I’m just glad it wasn’t Vanderpump Rules or Duck Dynasty. WHERE IS DOCTOR WHO?!??!!

Favorite Premium Cable TV Show

“Californication”
“Game of Thrones”
“Girls”
    “Homeland”***WINNER
“True Blood”

When is Netflix getting a shot at this? Forget the streaming category, everyone watches on DVR or the internet anyway. GoT, True Blood, Sherlock, Hemlock Grove.

Favorite Cable TV Actress

Angie Harmon
Claire Danes
Courteney Cox
    Lucy Hale***WINNER
Maggie Smith

Please stop awarding mediocrity. Pretty Little Liars won’t go off the air if their people win awards. Stop it! Angie Harmon is great on Rizzoli and Isles, I love Maggie Smith but Downtown Abbie makes me snooze.

Favorite TV Anti-Hero

Dexter Morgan (“Dexter”)
Jaime Lannister (“Game of Thrones”)
Norman Bates (“Bates Motel”)
    Rick Grimes (“The Walking Dead”)***WINNER
Walter White (“Breaking Bad”)

People are dumb.

Favorite TV Bromance

Blaine and Sam (“Glee”)
Ryan and Esposito (“Castle”)
    Sam, Dean and Castiel (“Supernatural”)***WINNER
Sheldon, Leonard, Howard and Raj (“The Big Bang Theory”)
Ted, Marshall and Barney (“How I Met Your Mother”)

The only actual Bromance (i’m not counting HIMYM because it’s terrible) in this is between Howard and Raj. Ryan and Espo work together, are the best of friends, I don’t think it’s a bromance. I wonder if the people putting these voting things together actually track with these shows…

Favorite TV Gal Pals

Caroline and Max (“2 Broke Girls”)
Lily and Robin (“How I Met Your Mother”)
Meredith and Cristina (“Grey’s Anatomy”)
Penny, Bernadette and Amy (“The Big Bang Theory”)
    Rachel and Santana (“Glee”)***WINNER

I would also have nominated Howard and Raj for this one.

Favorite On-Screen Chemistry

Castle and Beckett (“Castle”)
Damon and Elena (“The Vampire Diaries”)***WINNER
Derek and Meredith (“Grey’s Anatomy”)
Emma and Hook (“Once Upon A Time”)
Kurt and Blaine (“Glee”)

Stop it. You vote on terrible things. Is this list over yet?

Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show

    “Beauty and the Beast”***WINNER
“Once Upon A Time”
“Supernatural”
“The Vampire Diaries”
“The Walking Dead”

Makes sense, I’m sure nobody has heard of Doctor Who…

Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor

Andrew Lincoln
   Ian Somerhalder***WINNER
Jared Padalecki
Jensen Ackles
Stephen Amell

Who needs 50 years of TV history when you have vampires! BUT I’m glad they threw Arrow a bone.

Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress

Emilia Clarke
Ginnifer Goodwin
    Kristin Kreuk***WINNER
Nina Dobrev
Tatiana Maslany

I’m going to pretend she won this for Smallville.

Favorite TV Movie/Miniseries

    “American Horror Story”***WINNER
“Behind the Candelabra”
“The Bible”
“Sharknado”
“The White Queen”

Coven was fantastic. Agree with this one 100%. Honorable mention to Sharknado.

Favorite Daytime TV Host(s)

    Ellen DeGeneres***WINNER
Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan
Dr. Phil McGraw
Rachael Ray
Steve Harvey

I have job.

Favorite New Talk Show Host

Arsenio Hall
Bethenny Frankel
Jenny McCarthy
    Queen Latifah***WINNER
Ross Mathews

I am job.

Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host

Conan O’Brien
David Letterman
Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Kimmel
    Stephen Colbert***WINNER

I am usually too busy trying to finish my shows that Late Night is my signal to turn off the TV.

Favorite Streaming Series

“Arrested Development”
“Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis”
“House of Cards”
“Losing It with John Stamos”
    “Orange Is the New Black”***WINNER

This is fine. Honorable mention to every show on Hashtag Studios

Favorite Series We Miss Most

“30 Rock”
    “Breaking Bad”***WINNER
“Dexter”
“Fringe”
“The Office”

There are so many in this category, I do miss Fringe. Breaking Bad hasn’t been gone long enough, I see those guys everywhere. Vince Gilligan just helped with Sony’s Keynote at the International CES in Vegas!

Favorite New TV Comedy

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
“The Crazy Ones”
“Dads”
“The Goldbergs”
“The Michael J. Fox Show”
“The Millers”
“Mom”
“Sean Saves the World”
    “Super Fun Night”***WINNER
“Trophy Wife”

You let Rebel Wilson do all the voting for this, right? You locked her in a room for 3 weeks and said “Rebel, you can’t come out until you’ve filled out all of these ballots for New TV Comedy, be a good girl and hurry up, we’ll put the kettle on”

…cont’d…. I think Sean Saves has had maybe one or two shows, it’s not awesome, it’s not terrible, but it’s not favorite. The rest can wash away with the tide.

Favorite New TV Drama

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
“Betrayal”
“The Blacklist”
“Dracula”
“Hostages”
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland”
“The Originals”
    “Reign”***WINNER
“Sleepy Hollow”
“The Tomorrow People”

The last 4 would have been the finalists for this. I LOVE Agents of SHIELD, but until last night I thought it was getting stale. Now I like it again. NOTE: THERE ARE NO SUPER HEROES IN THIS SERIES. It’s normal people, cool toys, and Coulson. That is all. – Sleepy Hollow is great, Reign, TO and TTP are all enjoyable.

The rest is music, and that doesn’t matter. Have a great rest of the week! Don’t forget to tune in to all the shows on the Hashtag Studios Broadcast Network:

Mondays @ 6pm – Billy and the Hawk
Wednesdays @ 7pm – The Supercast
